Here’s something most people don’t realize. There is more than one type of gutter. Most people don’t really give these things much thought, so they assume it’s a one size fits all sort of deal. There are two ways to differentiate a gutter. The first is the shape, the second is the material.
For shapes, you’re looking at two basic styles. These can sometimes affect gutter cleaning Perth but only in extreme and unusual cases.
A K-style gutter is identifiable by the flat bottom and back. On the front, you’ll usually find something decorative like a curve. It might try to mimic crown moulding, but it might also go with another style. The downspout is usually also decorative.
The other style is the half-round. These are more like tubes. You’re more likely to see these in older homes, or even historic ones. They have half the capacity of the K-style but also cost less.
Now, let’s move on to looking at the materials available.
Aluminium is the most widely used. It’s lightweight, which makes it easy for people to install. It also won’t rust, so that one thing you’re never going to worry about. The thickness is good for long-lasting duty, and it’s possible to paint it.
Though we recommend getting a professional to install it. Cleaning regularly is also important.
A related choice is seamless aluminium. This is different because they’re made at the job site, with the material being a single, seamless whole. The gutters are fabricated on the spot using a gutter-forming machine, allowing for adjusting to any length needed.
Most modern installations are of the seamless type. The risk of leaks is much lower. However, it’s also more expensive than your average setup.
Copper is also a good choice as material. It’s exceptionally beautiful and won’t rust.
You don’t need to paint copper. Over time, you’ll get the patina even without colouring being done. You need a professional installation, though. The seams and joints require welding, so that means you’re not doing it yourself. High-end residences and historic restorations see copper a lot.
Be warned that if you go with copper, it’s expensive. Between the cost of installation and the material itself, it will put a dent in your budget.
Finally, there is steel. These are strong, can resist rust but might need replacing in five to ten years. You can paint them all sorts of colours. They’re also very heavy.
